Our School Badge and Sculpture
Our school badge is a depiction of St. Michael. The iconography of the design is based on the image of St. Michael that was erected outside the rebuilt Coventry Cathedral, having been designed and sculpted by the greatest living sculptor of the time, Sir Jacob Epstein. Our school is dedicated to St. Michael due to the strong links to the neighbouring church of St. Michael and All Angels. The link with Coventry comes through the second headteacher of the school who trained as a teacher in Coventry and remembered this statue of St. Michael. |

Pupils have explored who St Michael is. The Bible and Christian Tradition depict him as a champion of justice, a healer of the sick, and the guardian of the Church. In art, St Michael is depicted with a sword, a banner, or scales, and is often shown vanquishing Satan in the form of a dragon (as shown in the wood sculpture in St. Michael's Church). During collective worship, pupils have been invited to think about how he acts as protector and guide, helping us to be courageous in resisting wrongdoing, and guiding us to make the right choices. | |
The depiction of St. Michael has been developed into a modern representation in the form of a sculpture of St. Michael. This sculpture sits as a focal point in the school's spiritual and reflective garden area. The sculpture was designed and constructed by artist Paul Margetts. A smaller version of the sculpture can be seen at the front of the school. This picture was taken at a rare moment of snow in December 2024. |

The original school badge was based around the stylised cross used in Mediaeval heraldry to represent St. Michael the archangel. The badge was used from the opening of the school and features the cross with the school initials on either side. The original school badge can be seen in this document, which was uncovered in a recently discovered time capsule placed in the ground in 1983 (staining on the document was due to water ingress into the time capsule). |
